Figure skating is a sport for solo skaters and couples, in which style and technical skill are tested. There are four categories of amateur competition: single skating for men and women, pairs skating, and ice dancing. Skaters may progress from the pre-novice level through the novice, junior and senior levels. Teams of up to 20 skaters may compete in the discipline of synchronized skating. Single and pairs skaters are judged on a short program and a free-skating program.
